The Shape of the Plan is a body of work that explores, how ideas and concepts evolve over time. Through the use of one shape, repeated and layered multiple times. Dory’s paintings begin to tell stories. As each layer is applied, a new narrative evolves while older layers encapsulate moments in time.
Dory’s brightly colored acrylic on canvas on board paintings are highly tactile and conjure up memories of candy and sticky taffy. But the work, with it’s fun colors and simple repetitive shapes, is more than pop art. The work is an accessible yet sophisticated and new approach to Minimalism.
“I embrace and celebrate the modernist tenants of minimalism, which champion the ideas of repetition, sparseness and restraint. I employ these notions as a starting point when composing my paintings, however during the creative process I yield to my desires and end up creating physical depths through the plasticity of paint. In the end, I actualize a more maximalist approach to painting.”
