Steve Hollinger’s sculptures "draw energy from the natural environment, most often available as light and heat. Once completed, they are set off on their own in an independent existence."

While all of the work is cohesive, each body of work explores a very specific topic. Sculptures from the 2003-2004 series Borrowed Time were built as "sensitive amplifiers of otherwise imperceptible energy."

Following a year long study of the atomic age, sculptures and photographs from Hollinger's 2006 series Atomic were created as a response to his own questions about humanity, on certainty and fallibility. "This was a period when significant scientific discoveries arrived with largely unmanageable consequences."

Sculptures from the 2007-2008 series What's Left reflect Hollinger's recognition that "the most delicate of forms, real and perceived, are those which lend order and strength to the rest." After all, "what's left is that which remains when all else is gone."
