Notations by john dempcy

Referencing microbiology and genetics, I explore the myriad ways in which form and function unfold in nature. Within a limited framework of subtle modulations of shape, color, and pattern I strive to convey a sense of the balance that is struck between order and chaos, growth and decay.

Through my painting process, systematically applied drops of paint define building blocks that notate a network of interrelated components. Form follows process as the intrinsic character of the paint builds and shapes a distinct topography while color signals relationships between constituent parts. The resulting paintings are characterized by endless variation and nuance revealing processes and forms that reverberate in nature.
